Creating Your Website

November 22nd, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

This post is for those that think creating a website is going to be scary or difficult. Hopefully we can take some of the mystery out of the whole process and make you feel like you can do this in a matter of minutes you can completely set up with a website live on the Internet.

First things first, get yourself a domain name! You want something that reflects what your site is here for. Is it a site just for you, for fun? Then give your domain name your name or a name that fits your unique personality. If you are selling products that you make or that you are a reseller for then make sure that your domain name is relevant to what you are selling. Keep in mind that shorter is always better. Choose an appropriate domain name extension. Top level domain names that end in .org, .com, .net (and) can be harder to come by but there are always new domain name extensions becoming available. Just keep in mind that you want your domain name to be memorable! For domain names we recommend GoDaddy! They offer great services!
Now that you have a domain, what will you do with it? You can park it and put ads on it to earn a little money here and there but most likely you want to get building your website so get shopping for cheap web hosting. If you are going for an online store make sure you look at ecommerce solutions and security. If you are doing an informational site you can pretty much get by with any cheap web hosting but make sure the company is reputable and that they offer enough bandwidth and file transfer for your needs.
You can get a domain name and great hosting for a great value at BlueHost! They were recently awarded the Best Host for October 2009 from 100Best!!!
Once you have signed up for web hosting and your account is set up you can start building your site. For those of you who have done this before you know what you are doing but if you are new you will be glad if you chose a host that offers a free site builder. Not only is a free site builder a great asset for anyone building a site but these hosts often have tons of free website templates for you to choose from. This makes designing your site fun!
Once you have your overall layout planned with your color scheme you can start adding your content. If you want to be successful in anyway on the Internet you need to have a site rich in content. It isn’t enough to just put up content and then let a site go dormant. To be successful you keep things fresh, meaning that you add new content regularly. Not only will this be good for your repeat visitors but if you want other people to link to you or search engines to give you credibility you will surely need updated content as much as possible.
